Skin Care

As our skin is the first thing people see it can make a very strong impression, so it is essential not only to be familiar with our own skin but to combine this knowledge with the right products to improve its physical appearance and recapture its natural properties. Although there are many skin care ranges available there are key products that have been tried and tested and contain properties that will treat and significantly improve different skin types and problem areas.

Cosmeceuticals

Cosmeceuticals are highly effective and rewarding products to use. As they are more powerful than over the counter products they tend only to be available within a clinical setting and supplied by a trained practitioner. With the correct guidance and application these products can treat a variety of skin conditions, achieving effective, long-lasting improvements in the skin.

Exfoliators and Peels

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid products are composed of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, also known as AHAs, a group of acids that naturally occur in fruits such as apples, blackcurrants and animal products. Chemically they are called Glycolic Acid (sugar cane), Citric Acid ( citrus and red fruits) and Lactic Acid (animal products).

Glycolic Acid when applied topically functions as a very effective exfoliant, reducing skin damage from acne, dark pigmentation and the effects of UV rays and environmental pollutants. Glycolic Acids may also stimluate collagen growth, increase epidermal volume and achieve youthful glow.

Product range includes: Glycolic Cleanser, Glycolic Cream, Glycolic Lotion, Glycolic Hand and Body Cream, Glycolic peels 40% and 70%

Acne Treatments

Acne is a form of seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by bacteria and is one of the most common chronic skin disorders. The bacteria that cause acne thrive in an oxygen-free environment, encouraged by oil, dirt and pollutants trapped in the pores of the skin. The bacteria release toxins that break down the walls of the sebaceous glands, erupting into painful and inflamed acne lesions.

Treatment range inlcudes: Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser/Gels, Azelaic Acid Acne Cream, Derma Clarifier/ MDI Complex, Glycolic Acid Cream, Beta Hydroxy Cleanser, Beta Hydroxy Cream, Rosacea Moisturising Cream with Titanium Dioxide, Rosacea Creamy Cleanser

Hydrators, Moisturisers and Specialised Treatment Products

A wide range of products are available to hydrate and treat a variety of skin types and conditions in order to refresh and rejuvenate the skin.

Product range includes: Vitamin C, Retinol, CO-Q10 Cream, Anti-oxidants, Sensitivity Range, Hydrators, Moisturisers, Solar Range, Eye Care, Lip Treatments

Medically Prescribed Skin Care Programmes

These highly advanced, medically prescribed skin care products are available after a full consultation. Unlike other products they are intracellular and work by stimulating the cells in the epidermis and dermis to increase collagen production, regulate melanocytes and increase cell turnover, resulting in visibly dramatic improvements in the colour, texture and condition of the skin and a reduction of acne scarring and wrinkles.

Treatment for: Acne, Sun damage/pigmentation, Melasma, Wrinkles

Product range includes: Nu Derm protocols, Obagi Blue Peel

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any product that can effectively treat my pigmentation?
Yes, there are a variety of products available which are well researched and effective in reducing hyperpigmentation on the skin, such as that caused by sun damage. The medically prescribed skin care treatments have also proven to be very effective in significantly reducing pigmentation problems such as melasma. In some cases a peel may be required and this must be carried out by a practitioner who is both experienced and qualified in resurfacing procedures. Laser treatment is not usually advisable for melasma. It is advisable to use a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen, which will protect the skin from further darkening of[or?] pigmentation. A sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or above is recommended, and it may be advisable to use a sunblock especially designed for the face, to reduce irritation of the facial skin.

Should I have a face peel?
A face peel can be a very effective way of reducing fine lines, pigmentation and sun damage, giving a refreshed, youthful glow to the face and other parts of the body such as the hands and chest. There are different types of peels available and the choice will depend on several factors. These will be discussed at your consultation and include skin type, colour, thickness and of course available 'down time'. If the patient's skin is suitable for a deeper peel (TCA) it is also important to be aware that the deeper the peel the more recovery time will be needed. Lighter peels such as the Glycolic tend to need little recovery time, so that a patient can resume normal activity almost immediately afterwards.

Should I use an exfoliator?
Exfoliators are an effective way of removing a build-up of dead cells on the skin's surface to reveal a brighter, fresher skin. It is important, however, not to use too harsh a product or too often as this could make the skin sore. Exfoliating products such as Glycolic Acid, when used correctly, are a very effective and yet gentle way of exfoliating the skin. These chemical exfoliators work by breaking down the intracellular glue that holds the dead cells together on the surface and are then washed away. This method not only provides a more effective exfoliation but can be less abrasive on the skin than grainy products working almost like sandpaper. When the dead surface layers are removed, the skin can feel softer and it can allow easier penetration of moisturisers and treatment products.

What is the best way to get rid of red veins on the face?

Depending on the colour and thickness of the skin, laser is probably the best treatment for facial red veins. This must however be carried out by a qualified and trained practitioner.
